The Baltimore Orioles will take on the New York Yankees on a Friday night matchup.
Baltimore will employ their Opening Day Lineup, which includes Seth Smith leading off, Hyun Soo Kim batting seventh and Jonathan Schoop in the eight hole. It’s an intriguing lineup to say the least, but it could be successful against the struggling Yankees pitcher Luis Severino.
Severino pitched to a 5.83 ERA in 2016.
- RF Seth Smith
- CF Adam Jones
- 3B Manny Machado (batting .375/.444/.1250 against Severino in 9 PAs)
- 1B Chris Davis
- DH Mark Trumbo
- C Welington Castillo
- LF Hyun Soo Kim
- 2B Jonathan Schoop
- SS J.J. Hardy
Starting Pitcher: Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44 ERA in 2016)
Jimenez pitched very well down the stretch for the Orioles last season. His ERA in 2016 doesn’t necessarily reflect that, but if he can carry over some of that success, we could see a whole new Ubaldo. Jimenez’s 2017 campaign will start off against a Yankees lineup that is slashing .321/.416/.462 in opposition to him… Ouch. Can he overcome this adversity?
- LF Brett Gardner
- C Gary Sanchez
- 1B Greg Bird
- DH Matt Holliday
- CF Jacoby Ellsbury (batting .438/.526/.625 against Jimenez in 16 at-bats)
- 2B Starlin Castro
- 3B Chase Headley
- RF Aaron Judge
- SS Ronald Torreyes
Starting Pitcher: Luis Severino (3-8 record, 5.83 ERA in 2016)
As previously stated, Severino has struggled recently. He also spoke recently to Andrew Marchand of ESPN about his struggles recently.
“I know that he can throw 95,” Severino says of Tanaka via ESPN. “I said, ‘Why don’t you throw hard?’ He said, ‘If I throw hard the first inning, then I’m not going to have energy in the fifth inning.’ I’m trying to do that and save my gas for later, trying to command my pitches. When I’m not trying to throw hard, I can still throw 96-97.”
Severino has a lot of talent, but can he put it all together against the Birds of Baltimore?
