Mark Trumbo Propels Orioles to Opening Day Victory

The Baltimore Orioles gave their fans a wild finish on Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was just the finish that they wanted. Baltimore defeated the Blue Jays 3-2 on a blast from designated hitter Mark Trumbo in the 11th inning. Trumbo’s home run had an exit velocity of 105 mph.

To begin the game, starting pitcher Kevin Gausman looked electric. He constantly touched 97 mph with his fastball and at one time, he may have thrown a cutter that clocked in at the same speed. In the bottom of the first, Adam Jones doubled, followed by a walk from Manny Machado. Trumbo and Chris Davis couldn’t punch in the run.

Orioles catcher Welington Castillo got his first hit with the Orioles after Blue Jays left fielder Ezequiel Carrera lost the ball in the sky. Castillo would end up at first and stay stranded for the rest of the inning.

Seth Smith would double to start the third inning. Davis would drive in the outfielder, but was thrown out by José Bautista while attempting to advance. Trumbo would also drive in an RBI during the second, making the score 2-0 at the end of the third.

Gausman dazzled in the fourth inning, throwing just 5 pitches. However, the biggest test of the day was the fifth inning. The bases were loaded and Kendrys Morales would be walked home. Gausman would eventually escaped the jam, but not after giving up one run.

Mychal Givens would come in for Gausman. He then allowed a double to Carrera, down the line. The score was now 2-2 after the sixth inning. Brad Brach came in an shut things down to bridge the gap to Zach Britton. Britton looked a little rough during the beginning of his first inning, giving up two singles. Of course, Britton wouldn’t be deterred. The Orioles closer would strikeout Darwin Barney and get Bautista out.

Britton worked within the tenth inning after the O’s couldn’t notch a run to finish off the Jays in the ninth. It came to the 11th inning and Trumbo was up for the task:

What a win for Baltimore to start the season off at 1-0.
