Baltimore Orioles: Interest In Outfield Ian Desmond

The Baltimore Orioles have interest in free agent outfielder Ian Desmond.

This is according to FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi:

Desmond, 31, signed a one-year, $8MM contract last offseason with the Texas Rangers and was offered the $17.5M. As is the case with every other free-agent that is offered the qualifying offer, the team that signs him would have to sacrifice their first round selection in next year’s draft.

This shouldn’t be a big deal to the Orioles according to MLB Trade Rumors:

Dating back to 2013, the O’s have punted draft picks in order to sign Ubaldo Jimenez, Nelson Cruz and Yovani Gallardo, and they’ve also traded Competitive Balance draft picks merely to facilitate salary dump trades that shed the salaries of middle relievers Ryan Webb and Brian Matusz as well.

If signed, Desmond fills a huge hole left by free-agent right fielder Mark Trumbo. Desmond had a .285/.335/.446 slash line, 22 homers and 21 stolen bases. This would give the Orioles a player who has a versatile game, something that they sorely lacked in many facets last season. He can both corner outfield positions and it was his fourth 20-20 season in the past five years.

The Orioles finished dead last in stolen bases with only 19. Desmond would more than double this stat with his 20. Also, Baltimore finished 21st in on-base percentage with .319. Desmond’s .335 would be absolutely critical for the Orioles.

Desmond’s price range will probably be in the four-year/$65M range. This will be more affordable than the deal that Trumbo will probably receive, that may be a little more expensive because of his power numbers. Desmond has played shortstop in the past and can take over for Hyun-Soo Kim on days where the Orioles face left-handed pitching.

Morosi also called Desmond a “young Ben Zobrist” in one of his tweets:

With an addition of someone like Desmond, he can fill in for injured players at different defensive positions. His ability to play all three outfield positions, plus shortstop, gives him a great value.
